Emergency Department Revitalization

Emergency Department Revitalization

GBGH Emergency Redevelopment ProjectThe Emergency Department Redevelopment project has been raising the excitement level at Georgian Bay General Hospital for several years as we prepared to turn a department built in the 1970's into a facility worthy of the 45,000 patients who walk through the door today.

Excitement reached a fever pitch in December 2012 when the project, which began with a fundraising campaign in 2005 – Our Best Care – received Ministry of Health and Long Term Care approval to proceed.

Under the watchful eye of project managers Blackthorn Group’s Mike DaSilva and Mike DaSilva Jr., the first phase of the project was completed in June 2014, at a cost of $5 million.

Phase I saw the addition of nearly 6,000 square feet in the space that previously housed the ambulance bay. This new area includes a new trauma room that is easily accessible from the ambulance bay as well as a new triage area, exam rooms, nursing station, new walk-in entrance, secure rooms and an expanded See and Treat area.

The entire project includes three phases and the final price-tag will be $12.7 million. Phase two will be the addition of a four-bay ambulance garage and phase three will tie the whole new department together with the existing space.  Phases 2&3 are set to begin in the Summer of 2016.
